Dr. Xavier's Work, Journey, and Documentaries

The World's Most Enlightening Region

In a world of conflicts and extremisms, often connected with religion and culture, this documentary is about a great enlightening exception. This film focuses on a small region in Kerala, India, with a history of ongoing harmony of Hinduism, Christianity and Judaism from the first century A.D. and Islam from the 7th century. Each of these religions also has shown peaceful resolution of more or less extremist tendencies within itself. The lessons from this unique example can promote peace and happiness at various levels from individual to global.

Harmony Beyond Belief: Two Religions, One Spirit

This documentary is about the unique Hindu-Muslim harmony in a small town called Erumeli in Kerala, India, and its greatest expression in a two day annual celebration in which both communities actively participate. Thousands of Hindu pilgrims pay respect at a mosque named after a Muslim sage Vavar. Legend is that Vavar, a pirate who looted people, was defeated by the Hindu Lord Ayyappa and then became an associate of Ayyappa. Ayyappa’s temple and Vavar’s mosque are on the opposite sides of the same street in Erumeli. Beyond their vast differences in beliefs, identity and rituals, Hindus and Muslims here have nurtured the spirit of harmony in a wonderfully unique way and they hold it proudly as a great example for the world. Interestingly there is a special place at Vaver’s mosque for people to perform the traditionally Hindu ritual of breaking coconuts and symbolically cutting through one’s selfish attachments and defenses while submitting to the divine spirit within...which promotes love, wisdom, and harmony.

New Book: Conscience, Spirituality, and Religion:

Conscience, spirituality, and religion explored in depth. The inner voice of conscience is one’s best guide to choose what is good and avoid what is bad, but we have other inner voices we pick up from society I call the inner parrot. St. Paul described conscience as judging by the “law written on the heart.” It involves reason, the Golden Rule, truth and moderation. Paul, emphasising conscience, warned that some people destroy faith by rejecting conscience. Like the Polly parrot, the inner parrot doesn't have a correct view of what is right and so we have to use conscience to accept or reject the social influences. Martin Luther King stimulated the conscience of the racist community to reject racism. Racism, sexism, extremism and all forms of hatred, including self–hate, are connected to the inner–parrot or superego as per Freud. This book provides a very useful perspective on spirituality, conscience and religion including an original insight into how conscience developed during the “Axial Age,” a concept developed by a German psychiatrist and historian Karl Jaspers. During the Axial Age (BCE 800 to 200) lived Confucius, Lao-tzu, Buddha, authors of the Hindu texts (Upanishads), several Jewish prophets and many Greek thinkers. Sociologists Robert Bellah and Hans Joas consider the Axial Age as the highest level of human cultural evolution. Living by conscience produces the good “fruit of the spirit” [love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control] and avoids the “works of the flesh”, in St. Paul’s terms. This book shows how religion with conscience promotes good fruits and religion going against conscience produces destructive results. Included are several cases of personal transformation from unhealthy or evil lifestyles to spiritually healthy lives by using conscience.
